In short: Yalong Bay for the beach and the established luxury hotels, Haitang Bay for new resorts, families and duty-free, Dadonghai for a walkable town bay, and Sanya Bay for the shortest airport transfer and lower rates. Choosing the bay decides more than choosing the hotel: it sets the beach, the evenings and the driving time to every excursion.
The four bays at a glance
- Sanya Bay — 10–15 minutes from Sanya Phoenix airport; long town beach and seafront promenade; lower rates; a more modest sea.
- Dadonghai — about 30 minutes from the airport; a town bay with about 3 km of coastline between the city and the Luhuitou peninsula; cafés, shops and pharmacies within walking distance.
- Yalong Bay — about 40 minutes from the airport, 25–30 km east of the city; about 7.5 km of white sand; international resorts; little outside the hotels.
- Haitang Bay — about an hour from the airport and around 28 km from the city; the newest resort district; Atlantis Sanya and the city's main duty-free complex.
Yalong Bay
The bay Sanya is known for: a crescent of fine white sand, a long gentle entry into the water and resort hotels along most of the shore. The Ritz-Carlton, The St. Regis, Marriott, Hilton and MGM Grand sit on the beach itself; Swissôtel (opened in 2025) and Pullman are across the road, a few minutes' walk from the sand. The Ritz-Carlton has pool villas with butler service.
Headlands shelter the bay, so the sea is usually calmer here in winter, although on windy days waves still come in. The trade-off is isolation: evenings are spent in the hotels, and the city is about half an hour away.
Haitang Bay
The youngest resort district, built mostly from the 2010s: Atlantis Sanya with its water park and aquarium (1,314 rooms, opened in April 2018), Wanda Reign Resort & Villas — which opened in 2010 as the first Conrad in mainland China and has operated as Wanda Reign since 2022 — Rosewood and The Sanya EDITION. The main duty-free complex of Sanya is here, and since November 2025 its purchases also qualify for guests flying from Hainan straight to an international destination.
The bay faces the open sea: in the winter north-easterly wind some beaches fly red flags or close swimming. It is also the furthest bay from the city and from excursions in the west of Sanya, so groups spend more time on the road.
Dadonghai
Part of the city rather than a resort enclave: hotels, restaurants, shops and pharmacies stand close to the beach, and most of the coastline can be walked in under an hour. The sand is coarser and the water less clear than in Yalong, and the beach is busier. For first-time visitors, families who want everything within walking distance and groups on an excursion-heavy programme, it is the practical choice. The Luhuitou park viewpoint is next door, and the small Xiaodonghai bay with its marina sits beyond the peninsula.
Sanya Bay
The long western town beach with a seafront promenade and sunset views, closest to the airport and to the city centre. Hotels are generally less expensive than in Yalong and Haitang; the sea and the beach are more modest. A good base for short stays, late arrivals and itineraries built around excursions.
Villas and private options
Beyond the four main bays, several resorts are built around private pool villas: Banyan Tree at Luhuitou (49 pool villas in a tropical garden), Mandarin Oriental at Coral Bay, and Capella at Tufu Bay with one- to four-bedroom villas. For high-net-worth clients the choice is usually between these and the villa categories of Yalong and Haitang.
