In short: Sanya is worth it for a dry, warm winter beach holiday with international resort brands, for families, and for travellers who want tropical China without a visa. It is a weaker choice for travellers who want backpacker freedom, nightlife in English or a cheap street-food destination, and for anyone who cannot avoid Chinese public holidays. Below is a balanced view from a company based in Sanya: what works, what surprises first-time Western visitors, and how to prepare.
Why people go
- Winter sun: November to April is the dry season, around 27–30 °C by day in Sanya.
- Resort beaches: Yalong and Haitang bays have calm water and international hotel brands on the sand.
- Easy entry: nationals of 61 countries can visit Hainan visa-free for up to 30 days.
- Duty-free: offshore duty-free shopping from age 18, up to ¥100,000 a year, including on direct international departures.
- Something different: Buddhist Nanshan, rainforest parks, Li and Miao culture, Wuzhizhou Island.
What surprises first-time Western visitors
- English is limited outside international hotels: taxi drivers, markets and pharmacies work in Chinese.
- Payments run through Alipay and WeChat Pay. Foreign Visa and Mastercard cards can be linked to both, and payments up to ¥200 carry no wallet fee; above that a 3% fee applies.
- Google, WhatsApp and Instagram do not work on Chinese networks. A roaming plan or a foreign eSIM usually keeps them working; set this up before departure.
- Chinese public holidays change everything: the October Golden Week and Spring Festival bring crowds and peak prices.
- Distances: the bays are spread over 40 km, so a car or transfer is part of every plan.
Sanya against Bali, Phuket and Vietnam
Compared with Phuket or Bali, Sanya is more resort-led and less backpacker-friendly: fewer English menus, fewer independent bars, more international hotel brands on calm beaches. Its winter is milder — around 27 °C by day in January against the low 30s in Phuket — and the sea is cooler, about 23 °C in January. Summer brings rain and the typhoon season from June to October.
The case for Sanya is strongest for a winter resort stay with a short list of sights, for families who want calm water, and for guests who combine a beach week with shopping or a medical consultation in the Boao Lecheng zone on the east coast.
Sanya weather by month →Who should go, and who should not
- Go: couples and families who want a resort holiday with winter sun; travellers who like structure and good hotels; shoppers.
- Go with preparation: independent travellers who are happy to set up payment apps and translation in advance.
- Think twice: travellers who want English-language nightlife or a backpacker scene, and anyone whose dates fall on Chinese public holidays.
- Not in summer: guests who cannot handle heat and humidity or who have no flexibility for a storm day.
How to make it work
- Choose the bay before the hotel: Yalong for the beach, Haitang for families, Dadonghai to walk everywhere, Sanya Bay for the shortest transfer.
- Link a card to Alipay and test it at home; carry some cash in small notes.
- Arrange an eSIM or roaming plan before you fly.
- Book transfers, at least the arrival: many flights land late at night.
- Avoid the first week of October and the Spring Festival week if you can.
Medical travel: a separate decision
Some guests come to Hainan for the Boao Lecheng pilot zone, where clinics may use certain medicines and devices approved abroad under a special regime. This is a separate decision taken with doctors after an in-person consultation, not part of a beach holiday plan. Contraindications exist — a specialist consultation is required.
